The Meaning Of Light

The meaning of Sunlight is relief. It appears frequently during Lemon’s death. At first, Lemon went into the shadow where was no sunlight. However, after the author heard the noise, he found that Lemon was stepping from shade into bright sunlight, which suggest that Lemon went to the Heaven. The shade here represents Vietnam where the war took place. Thus, his death was a kind of relief and he would no longer suffer the torment of the cruel war.

The sunlight also represents a new begin because Lemon might enter a new world after his death. He would live in a peaceful life in that place, and there was no need for him to take part in a war, therefore, he could chase his own dreams.

Author also mentioned sunlight at the end of the article and said that Lemon “must’ve thought that it was the sunlight that was killing him”. Here, the sunlight means hope and peace because the article also mentioned that people were sober before their death. From the description, Lemon was only a child and every kid would miss his family when he was far away from their home. At the end of his life, he knew clearly what he really wanted.

In author’s mind, the light means hope. The sunlight flashed for a very short time and he saw it on Lemon’s face. The hope is always be small and can be hardly seen during a war. When it appeared on Lemon’s face, they might think that they can be sent back home and get away form here because of his death.

  1. You have a very positive interpretation of "light" here. Perhaps this is because many authors associate light with pleasant, positive things. Readers are trained to interpret light this way. But I think O'Brien is doing something different here. Look again. What is he doing? Why do you think he does this?
